Creative Connections on Remembrance Day

This November, I had the privilege of leading two Remembrance Day–themed art workshops at local senior homes, Chartwell Grenadier Retirement Residence and Delmanor West Village.  What began as a simple idea—to bring creative expression and meaningful connection to older adults—quickly became one of the most fulfilling experiences of my year. As an artist, I’ve always believed in the healing and unifying power of creativity, but these sessions reminded me just how impactful art can be when it’s shared in community.

Honouring Remembrance Day with Collage

For each workshop, I created a hands-on collage class centered around the theme of Remembrance Day. I arrived with a selection of textured papers, images, markers, and other materials that participants could use to express their own relationship to remembrance, gratitude, peace, and memory. What unfolded was incredibly touching.

Many residents used the collage activity as a moment to reflect on personal histories. Some spoke about family members who served in the military; others shared stories of resilience from their own lives. As they arranged images, colors, and textures, their collages became deeply personal pieces of art—visual tributes filled with emotion and meaning. It was inspiring to watch how quickly creativity sparked conversation, connection, and even moments of healing.

One of the most beautiful parts of the collage process was the sense of freedom it created. Even participants who were hesitant at first soon found themselves engaged, experimenting with shapes, cutting out symbols, and layering elements that reflected their experiences. The room slowly shifted from quiet concentration to warm, steady conversation, with residents complimenting each other’s work and sharing memories sparked by the materials in front of them.

Creating Handmade Poppies

Alongside the collage component, I also led the residents through a second activity: creating handmade poppies. This simple, hands-on craft brought a wonderful sense of focus and collaboration to the group. As we folded, shaped, and assembled each poppy, the room filled with stories about wartime memories, family legacies, and the powerful symbolism of the poppy itself.

There was something profoundly moving about watching everyone work together on these small red flowers. It felt like a collective act of remembrance—one that connected generations, experiences, and emotions. The residents took great pride in their finished poppies, often holding them up with smiles or chatting excitedly about where they planned to display them.

A Warm and Welcoming Reception

The feedback from both senior homes was overwhelmingly positive. The residents were engaged and enthusiastic, many expressing how refreshing it was to participate in a creative workshop. Staff members shared how valuable it was to see their community energized, focused, and genuinely enjoying themselves. For me, the experience was deeply rewarding—not just as an artist, but as someone who believes in the importance of giving back.

These workshops reaffirmed my belief that creativity is for everyone. Regardless of age, mobility, or experience, art has a way of opening doors to self-expression, connection, and joy. Watching seniors light up as they created something meaningful reminded me why I love teaching and why programs like these are so vital.

Looking Ahead to the New Year

This experience has inspired me to continue offering art workshops for seniors throughout the new year. I plan to expand these programs with new themes, new materials, and new ways for residents to express themselves. Whether through collage, painting, craft-making, or other creative techniques, I’m committed to creating spaces where seniors can feel inspired, seen, and celebrated.

If you’re connected to a senior home or community group that would enjoy a creative workshop, I would love to bring these programs to you. Sharing art with others—especially older adults with rich histories and stories—is one of the greatest joys of my work.
